Stone entanglement with Barbara Hepworth
2010- 2020
Alabaster
35cm x 30 cm x 55 cm.

How long have you had a studio at APT?
I have been at APT for 18 years.

Which female artists inspired you growing up?
The artist that most influenced me when growing up was Barbara Hepworth because she had many children, a single child, then triplets and a husband, but still managed to be an artist.

I later met one of the triplets who was emotionally damaged because his mother put the children in an orphanage during the week, so that she could carry on her artwork.

What is the most important piece of advice you have been given?
The best advice: was from a female sculptor to really 'finish everything as best as you can' meaning that you look at every angle of the sculpture and make careful strong decisions as to how the edge looks against the background, the air.

This means that sculpture is a series of edges and lines against the background

Why did you choose this piece work today?
Sometimes it takes a long time to develop a sculpture This sculpture started from a trip I had with my son to Morocco with references to the fabric swathed around his head, then was turned, developed and was shown at the APT exhibition in the Hague, then followed another deeper delving into and through the stone . It can be turned over and exhibited in different positions. Alabaster is a wonderful sensual stone.
