Q&A
Describe APT in 3 words
Cold bright studios
Which artists have influenced you?
Georges Braque, Markus Lupertz, Luc Tuymans
What is the most unusual thing someone might find in your studio?
There’s nothing that unusual as is quite a practical room, but people often comment on the aluminium chair I have.
What ambitions and projects do you have beyond APT?
I hope the paintings will continue to surprise and embolden me. I also started a gallery space called Loveday earlier this year so am working hard to make that blossom too.
In November I have a solo show opening at South Parade Gallery that I am very excited about. And at Loveday we have a year of shows planned that I’m really excited to share with everyone.
Q&A
Describe APT in 3 words
mirific, empyrean, quaesitum
Which artists have influenced you?
The images that I look at over and over again are usually those by unnamed craftsmen of the deep past. I'm drawn to the strangeness and slight dislocation we have looking at these objects and images and trying to understand them. I have books and books of medieval illuminated manuscripts, prehistoric figurines, stained glass, ceiling bosses and tapestries. Always close to hand is the Scivias of Hildegarde von Bingen which has a peculiarity and vividness all of its own.
What is the most unusual thing someone might find in your studio?
I'm definitely a hoarder that feeds my bent towards a multidisciplinary practice. Amongst the orange net bags from tangerines, children's stickers and carpet samples, I have a lot of photographs of human bones from archeological excavations, but perhaps that's not particularly unusual, just source material...
What ambitions and projects do you have beyond APT?
After APT I'm moving to my new studio which isn't that far away from APT. I have lined up some collaborative projects with artists that I really admire and have 1001 ideas that I've written down in various notebooks to pursue and investigate. I also want to want to finish my first novel which I've been writing on and off for a few years.
