In the studio with… Véronique Chance

How long have you been at APT?
I have been at APT since the summer of 2014.

Describe APT in three words...
Supportive; Affordable; Cooperative.

What is your practice and how do you like to work in your studio?
My practice is quite wide-ranging. My background is in printmaking, but my work has developed to encompass, a range of media, including drawing, print, performance, video, photography, digital media, 3D; installation. In around 2007 i started incorporating the activity of running as part of my artistic practice. Whilst this predominantly takes place in the outside environment, I use the studio to plan long-distance running artworks and to process ephemera that has been live streamed during a run, subsequently. I currently have am 8 metre map/drawing, that is the planning document for a live run I did in June 2021, following the length of the length of the River Thames, and which was part of the Estuary 2021 Festival Associated Programme. This is now forming the main part of a multi-media installation Thames Run: Source to Sea, to which I have added photographs, printed blog pages and re-cycled phones, which are being used as media players, to replay footage of the run, that was originally live-streamed.

Which artists have influenced you?
No single artist in particular. I like a lot of the pioneering work by early video artists from the 1960s and 1970-s , such as by Vito Acconci, Dan Graham, Bruce Nauman, Joan Jonas and Valie Export. These artist were already experimenting with live video streaming, way before developments in digital media.

More recent work I have been drawn to has been the work of Matthew Barney, Harun Farocki, Pipilotti Rist, Agnes Denes, amongst others.

What is the most unusual thing someone might find in your studio?
A traditional wooden stacking gymnastics vaulting box. I bought it some years ago for only £50 from a school in north London that was getting rid of it. i was going to make a piece of work with it. i started attemnding an adult gymnastics club to re-learn how to vault over it and I was going to video the vault from the front. however, I twisted my ankle quite badly, which put a stop to my plans. It has however, made a very handing storage box and it's stil a great-looking sculptural object too.
