LOU SMITH

Lou Smith specialises in Fine Art abstract painting and photography. Lou's paintings are large scale surfaces saturated with colour and infused with light. Layers of colour gently resonate within these paintings as surfaces collide and mingle. The paintings are meditations, a space within which to contemplate and refresh the mind.

Lou uses photography to feed the natural world of surface, colour and texture into her painterly surfaces. Exploring simplicity of form and transforming the ordinary, everyday into dynamic images.  Lou Smith is also an avid street photographer capturing the uniqueness of the time in which she lives.

Selected exhibitions include; Switch, Den Haag, Netherlands, John Moores Liverpool Exhibition, Royal Academy, London, Creekside Open, APT Gallery, London, 369 Gallery, Edinburgh, Air Gallery, London, Camden Arts Centre, London, Colour Paintings, Centre 181, Hammersmith, London, Essex Festival of Contemporary Arts, Colchester Arts Centre, Essex and Woodlands Art Gallery, Greenwich, London.  Her paintings have been filmed for an independent production for Channel 4, and for Lewisham College.  Lou opens her studio to the public every year as part of APT Open Studios.

Since 1990 Lou Smith has taught Visual Arts subjects in Adult Education and Colleges. She has also delivered workshops for the Whitechapel Art Gallery, APT Trust and schools throughout London.

Lou Smith graduated in 1981 with a First Class BA Honours Degree in Fine Art Painting. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Lou has lived and worked in London since 1978.  She has been a member of APT since  1995
