Introduction

Richard Lawrence and Margaret Higginson are two long established artists at APT. They both share an interest and concern for the natural world which is reflected in their work. They both work in wood, one of the oldest sculpture mediums.

Richard Lawrence’s approach is a contemporary take on the natural environment, sculptures and woodcut prints that document the damage and loss of wilderness as well as a lament to that loss.

Margaret Higginson delves into the abstract growth rings of the wood. This highlights both a sculptural and a literal reading of time passing.

They produce forms that are aesthetic and challenging, giving pause to thought, to touch and reflect.
