Theo Dunne

“I am a trans maker, crafter and story weaver of alternative realities. Pulling on the thread of folklore and hidden queer histories, I build mystical environments out of found scraps - tying together loose ends in the form of words, sounds, images, matter and movements. I translate my experiences of trans identity, grief, death and uncertainty through non-linear narratives - instead choreographing happenings and moments that invite a comforting chaos. The act of building a whole new reality as a queer person is reflected in my desire to forge a theatrical, hectic, tangible segment of a world all are welcome to visit, and perhaps stay a while.

Recently, the haptic habitats I build and the formulaic performances that live there have been specifically sprouted from my own trans journey in the wake of my dad’s death. This is something I explored whilst studying Contemporary Art Practice at the RCA and it took the form of building sets from scraps, collating research, experimental modes of choreography and painting ladders that lead to nowhere. My work is a catharsis and acts as a way of debunking the myth of the world around me. I fill in the gaps with time-less stories of mystical trans entities and every day apocalypses.

I say:

Once this world is over, we can all go home

And you say whatever you want about that.

I am also interested in interrogating different modes of accessibility and am constantly striving to ensure my work is a place for those who frequently feel displaced.”

”It is a great and exciting honour to be part of APT for the next year with the Studio 1.10 residency.”
