Chris Alton

Chris Alton

Winner of A.P.T's Graduate Studio Award 2016 to 2017

Chris Alton's artworks often draw upon multiple, seemingly un-associated, cultural phenomena. Whether deploying disco music against xenophobia or playing table tennis in competition with aggressive architecture, he seeks to highlight unlikely parallels and produce bizarre situations. Through these situations, he aims to implement or imagine alternative ways of being in the world. This desire stems from his Quaker upbringing, which resonates throughout his practice.

Subversive and embellished with an eye for contradictions, Alton's works frequently exist as shared ideas developed through collaborations. They often find form in cultural artefacts, such as T-shirts, posters, publications and websites, which then re-enter the social realm.

Alton's current research involves the unearthing of previously unseen connections. Through seemingly incongruous juxtapositions, he seeks to visualise the power structures in which we are all embedded – narrativising that which is too complex to be immediately comprehendible. Working through simultaneous satire and celebration, he engages in cartographic processes that involve the cross-pollination of both fact and fiction.
