Why Birds Sing Up | Sound Installation

Friday from 6pm to 8pm
Saturday from 2pm to 6pm
Sunday from 2pmto 6pm

In 2010, artist Liz Harrison won the Deptford X Award for her sound installation in the railway station on Deptford High Street. How Birds Sing Up explored ways in which city birds’ behavioural patterns, and in particular their songs, are adapting in response to their urban environment. The station building was somewhat tired and in need of renovation, but its two-tier ‘cathedral-like’ stairway proved a fascinating canvas for Harrison. Working with station managers and staff, she installed low-tech speakers on each level of the site to play a series of recordings of the local dawn chorus. A subtle but powerful body of sound rose through the stairwells and merged with other city sounds that filtered in from the market. This is a re-interpretation installed in the stairwell of APT studios.
